Kinja'd!!!

Just spent 4 hours this morning at the DC DMV. What a terrible organization that should immediately be privatized. I had to switch over my out of state license and add a motorcycle endorsement. Unfortunately those two things can't be done at the same physical location so I had to go to two separate DMVs. Oh and they charge a 6% excise tax on newly registered vehicles. What a load of BS. - end rant

Wait, so a car that you already own, but newly register in DC, you have to pay a 6% tax on the value of the car?

The license plates really are accurate.

Correct. 6% of its NADA book value. If you buy a a new or used car out of state the amount taxed is on what you paid for the vehicle. Its goes up to 8% depending the GVRW of the vehicle. I spent over $400 at the DMV this morning.

That makes sense for if you buy a car outside of the District and have to pay DC sales tax. I've had to do that when I lived in Maryland and bought a car in Virginia, and bought a car in Illinois when I lived in Wisconsin.

But the excise tax on a car that you're just registering because you moved there, ouch. The only time I've registered a car in a new state was going from Maryland to Wisconsin, but there was no excise tax. Just the title transfer fee and the $75 yearly registration fee. Wisconsin is a cheap place to own a car.

I was at the DMV earlier today in PA to title and register an out of state car. It probably took 30mins tops. Including me having to pull the car around for them to check the vin and mileage.

If it helps, Canadian DMV's are super slow too. On the plus side, you get a little "Take a number" tag and they'll give you a decently accurate estimate of how long it should take. Then you can go grab some food or something and come back without losing your spot

That was unfortunately not an option. But seems extremely common-sensical. There was free wifi though.

Went to the VA DMV last Tuesday around noon. Fair oaks mall, probably a dozen people in there. It was amazing

Not sure if things are different in PA, but whenever I last renewed my licence I did it was easy as pie. Paid the state my $$$ online, then went to the local AAA office of all places with my camera card. There was nobody in line, so I pretty much just walked in, handed the lady my paperwork, smiled for the camera, and left with a new license. Took 15 min max from leaving my car to getting back in it.

Not enough people know that AAA offices double as DMVs. Unfortunately my transactions were too complicated for the AAA office this time.

They also charge extra. To register a car in MD they wanted about $70 on top of the MVA fees for tax/title/registration.

It is a little more for non-members.

My personal theory why the California DMV will never be fixed: there's apparently a private DMV office in the state capitol that is just for the state legislators.

Because, you know, who has time to wait in one of those lines? Certainly not the people who set the rules for the department.

Interesting. Not at all surprising. I grew up in CA and the DMV was just as bad there as in DC.
